Thinking about Genetic Drift

Genetic drift video still

This episode is a spillover from the study I’ve been doing on a particular paper. It’s a paper that’s being used by some of the skeptics, the anti-creationists, to really challenge the things I’ve said before. And it is a challenge. There are some really hard things coming down the pike that I’m having to answer. Now, I think I can answer it, and I think I’ve found the Achilles heel.

This is the most extreme example of genetic drift I’ve ever seen:

Árnadóttir et al. 2024, “The rate and nature of mitochondrial DNA mutations in human pedigrees,” Cell 187(15):3904-3910.

They sequenced 64,000 genomes from Iceland and found when they built the family trees of all these people — 116,000 generational steps — that there were 8,200 mutations just in the mitochondria alone.
