So, here’s a question. Why doesn’t the Bible say the age of the earth?
This question is usually stated as an objection, but it’s really a question in disguise. It might be stated something like this. “Umm, the Bible does not give an exact age for the earth. Therefore, we should not be concerned with it. Right?”
Easy enough to understand. The Bible doesn’t give an exact age for the earth because it is meant to be read over a long period of time. If the Bible said “the earth is 6,000 years old,” but someone was reading it 3,000 years ago, then the earth wouldn’t be 6,000 years old. So, who would ever expect it to say something like that?
Even if it did give an exact age at the time a passage was written, you would still have to use some sort of extrapolation to get the real age for the earth by adding whatever the age is during the accepted time of writing and the current age.
Beyond this, the New Testament, including Jesus and the Apostle Paul, don’t mention anything about the age of the Earth, so why should we care?
