Have you heard stories of a ferocious fish that lives in the Amazon River of South America that attacks anything that steps into the water and it strips the creature to the Bone within seconds?
Of course, we’re talking about a fish known as a piranha!
Now those stories are greatly exaggerated, but the piranha does have a set of small but very very sharp teeth and strong jaws able to deliver a powerful bite. Piranhas of several different species are found in many of the freshwater rivers that flow through the Amazon basin of South America, and are very common in some locations.
While they do have the reputation of being vicious meat eaters, they actually eat more than just fresh meat — they’ll eat the carcasses of recently dead animals and, surprisingly, they also eat fruits and plant matter. Scientists find that the pirahna’s most common food is other fish and they actually will even eat eat each other if food is scarce!
