Where do Neanderthals Fit into the Biblical Narrative?

The discovery of Neanderthals had a big impact on the acceptance of evolution. They were presented as caveman: stupid, half-ape, half-humans, hunched over and not even smart enough to build houses so they lived in caves. That’s pretty ridiculous, but that is the story that we’ve been given, and that’s a story that the world then mostly accepted.

Our ideas about these people have changed over the years as we get better at archaeology and find out more about these ancient people. But, where do they fit into the Bible’s story of Adam, Eve, and all of humanity?
