Fossils are the remains of once-living creatures that were turned to stone. Some fossils are of the creature itself; others are the impressions of their bodies — or even footprints — preserved when the surrounding ground hardened to rock. They come in all sizes and varieties, but all of them are more or less the grave markers of something that died.
Today, we’re taking the time to answer questions people have about fossils: how they form, what they represent, and what we can learn about our past by considering what we find in the ground today as we dig them up.
