It takes an extraordinary set of circumstances to cause a solar eclipse to be visible on Earth because they only occur when the Sun, Moon, and Earth are lined up in that particular order in exact alignment. While the Moon passes in front of the Earth every month, it does not cause an eclipse each time because its orbit wobbles higher and lower, causing its shadow to usually pass through empty space. But when the Moon’s orbit is centered over the Earth, things get interesting for us as the moon briefly covers the sun from our perspective.
Total solar eclipses are only visible in a narrow area on Earth as the Moon’s movement marks a path like a belt about 100 miles wide. As the Moon continues in its orbit at 2,286 miles per hour, each point of its journey provides viewers a bare handful of minutes of full coverage. During this moment in time, it is possible to look directly at the Sun’s corona, which is still emitting its own delicate light with its memorable signature, as the sky grows dark enough for some of the brightest stars to become visible.
At the same time, many more people who live on the day side of the Earth will be able to see this eclipse partially, and with careful eye protection they can witness the grandeur of two large cosmic objects silently interacting in space.
The Perfect Cosmic Dance
For the total solar eclipse to occur, three objects must tango: the Sun, Moon, and Earth, with specific conditions. Not only do they need to be in alignment, but they must be at precise distances from each other. If the Moon were larger or closer, the Sun’s chromosphere would also be blocked, preventing us from studying this elusive aspect of the Sun. If the Moon were farther away or smaller, it would never fully cover the sun, also blocking our view of the corona. These precise distances demonstrate that these objects are carefully orchestrated
The size of the moon is critical not only for a total Solar Eclipse but also for life on Earth. The Moon is the right size to stabilize the critical tilt of the earth at 23.5 degrees with a variation of 1 degree above or below. The tilt of the earth causes the seasons so that the planet can be watered by rain through the water cycle. It is also responsible for the ocean tides responsible for mixing nutrients from the lands to the oceans. It has been recently revealed that tidal energy transfers to the deep ocean floor and drives ocean currents that regulate climate.
A Glimpse into a Grander Design
What we witness in the total eclipse is only a peak of the fantastic properties that these three astronomical objects have and how they interact with each other. They are each spectacular in their own way and designed to support complex life as we see it today.
The only conclusion is that it came from the hands of a loving Creator, as stated,
For this is what the LORD says — he who created the heavens, he is God; he who fashioned and made the earth, he founded it; he did not create it to be empty but formed it to be inhabited — he says: “I am the LORD, and there is no other.” Isaiah 45:18
