We now know that all of those creatures from the dog-sized animal to the full-sized modern horse have all been found in the same rock layers, so they can’t be an ancestor to one another.
God made an incredible variety of animals. Today, there are horses that stand all the way from just 3′ tall up to over 6′ tall. They can have differently shaped heads and different body structures. The fossilized animals with different numbers of toes or body shapes could be just varieties of extinct horse or a totally different kind of animal.
