Isn’t that incredible? I mean, look closely and you’ll notice this intricate lattice structure. It’s like a tiny glass tower. It reminds me of a 3D print that we would do to create rigidity without a lot of bulk. And this is not just beautiful, this is strong.
Engineers have studied these sponges to learn how to build better bridges and even stronger fiber optic cables that can’t be crushed. And the sponge also produces long, hair thin glass fibers that anchor it to the ocean floor. Maybe you can see even one of those hanging off right here. It’s incredible. So, these fibers bend without breaking, even under pressure that would crush most submarines today.
