The Wonderful Platypus: David Rives Kids’ Corner

When the first scientists examined a preserved platypus, they declared it a clever fake of the body parts of several different creatures expertly sewn together since, in their expert opinion, no, this could not exist. It’s too weird.

Of the more than 6,000 known species of mammals, only two mammals lay eggs instead of giving live birth. These two, the platypus and the spiny anteater, are known as monotremes. That is, they’re the only two egg laying mammals. But the platypus will usually lay two small leathery eggs that are similar to reptile eggs. And then upon hatching, the newly born young will be nursed by their mothers like all other mammals.
