Superstitious?

Is This Projection?

Looks like a behemoth to me!
Is this maybe a behemoth?

According to the article “Why Dinosaur Bones Were the Real Nail in Religion’s Coffin,” people like me who believe the Bible are “superstitious” and believe in “myths.”1

This is an article that popped up on my internet search engine page. After accusing Bible believers of being superstitious, the article talks about “humankind’s move from superstition to science,” and goes on to do a lot of elephant hurling, mentioning Copernicus, the printing press, the Enlightenment and scientific revolution, Isaac Newton, and Darwin’s Origin of the Species. Then the article elaborates on the discovery of dinosaur bones.

Let us go through each of these points  one at a time:

  1. Nicholas Copernicus was a pioneering astronomer who modeled the planets going around the sun. What did Copernicus say?
“To know the mighty works of God, to comprehend His wisdom and majesty and power; to appreciate, in degree, the wonderful workings of His laws, surely all this must be a pleasing and acceptable mode of worship to the Most High, to whom ignorance cannot be more grateful than knowledge.”2
  1. The printing press, using movable metal type, was invented by Johannes Gutenberg. It was the internet of its day and was a great tool in spreading knowledge. And what was the first great book printed in Western Europe using movable type? – The Bible! 3
  1. Regarding the Enlightenment and scientific revolution, the Bible gives us a foundation for doing science, explaining the universe is governed by laws (“Do you know the laws of the universe? Can you use them to regulate the earth?”4), and those laws are unchanging (“But this is what the Lord says: I would no more reject my people than I would change my laws that govern night and day, earth and sky.”5)
  1. Isaac Newton was perhaps the greatest scientist ever. What did Newton say? – “This most beautiful system of the sun, planets, and comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent and powerful Being.”6
  1. In Darwin’s Origin of Species, what Darwin actually observed is variation within a kind that fits very well with the biblical creation account. The Bible tells us God made plants and animals “each able to produce offspring of the same kind.”7 This biblical creation account also tells us that God made male and female. Sexual reproduction accounts for most of the variability within a kind. What Darwin did was to extrapolate his observations to conclude that all of life descended from a “simple” single-celled organism.
  1. Dinosaurs fit into the Bible well. Even if it were the case that the Bible did not mention dinosaurs, the Bible does not mention koala bears, and no one thinks this disproves the Bible. But Job 40 talks about a behemoth, which sounds a lot like a sauropod dinosaur.8 Some people try to explain it away by saying behemoth was an elephant. They claim the reference to the tail was just the swaying motion. Yes, it sways – like a cedar tree.

Furthermore, discoveries of soft tissue and red blood cells found inside non-fossilized dinosaur bones show that dinosaurs lived relatively recently. The Darwinists understand this. That is why they fired Mark Armitage for publishing his findings of soft tissue in a triceratops horn.9

It was later that same day I saw another article pop up, “Misconceptions About Evolution – What Do People Get Wrong?” 10 The idea is that if people do not accept Darwinian evolution, it is because they just do not understand it. I was already familiar with every point that they made. I would agree that a lot of people do not really understand Darwinian evolution. But I would argue that is why so many people do accept it. If they really understood it, they would understand how implausible it is, and how it is just a way to explain things without God.

More importantly, my seeing this second article supporting Darwinian evolution right after seeing the first shows just how pervasive this worldview is. Yet, churches and church leaders are still unwilling to take this issue on and challenge Darwinian evolution – even when offered help. They refuse to even have a conversation on this. And we keep losing more and more people to the world.

I Peter 3:15 says:  “Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it.”11 I do not believe that means having some gospel presentation memorized.  I believe it means really understanding what you believe, why you believe it, and being ready to answer someone else’s questions. You need to show people that you are not “superstitious.”
