By the 6th century BC, THIS planet was recorded in Babylonian history and recognized as the pagan god Marduk. Said by astrologers to bring happiness, or “jovial” behavior, the planet was named after the Roman god of the sky, Jupiter, or Jove.
The term “By Jove” refers to the pagan practice of swearing to Jupiter in Roman court.
As the largest planet in our solar system, Jupiter is one of the gas giants, so called because it is not composed of rock but rather of various types of gasses.
Similar to Earth’s own, the planet Jupiter has a magnetic field surrounding it, said to be 14 times stronger than that of Earth’s. Jupiter’s four largest moons, named after the lovers of Zeus: Callisto, Europa, Io, and Ganymede, are thought to be orbiting within this magnetic field and therefore are protected from solar wind.
Jupiter has an amazing 66 known moons, some being less than a mile in diameter.
Though Jupiter is a spectacular planet within our solar system, it has almost none of the life-supporting features given to Earth for habitation.
