The scriptures tell us that in the beginning, God created the heaven and earth in six days. The account uses the Hebrew word “yom” preceded by the number of each day, and clarified with the definition “evening and morning”.
So why, then, do we have Christians settling for a stretched interpretation of those passages, calling for great epochs of time to conform to the current accepted science?
Exegesis comes from the root: “to lead”, which is very concerning; because it implies that these INTERPRETATIONS are leading our thoughts, and NOT the scriptural message.
I am not a proponent of Biblical exegesis. I believe that every passage in the Bible should first and foremost be looked at simply in context. It was written so that anyone could understand, not in such a way that only brilliant minds could interpret it.
The Bible warns of those who try to add to the scriptures, and so many teachers today explain and interpret every passage in a way that fits their theology.
As if that is not enough, some scholars attempt to rationalize their beliefs through metaphysical rambling – and in metaphysics, the imagination is the limit. Colossians tells us “Beware lest any man SPOIL you through philosophy and vain deceit” That word translated “spoil” literally means to lead you away.
No, we must not settle for a Biblical interpretation conformed to current scientific thought. We should insist on using the WORD OF GOD – as our foundation for science.
“Every word of God is pure”, and His “word is true – from the beginning.”
