Erosion and Deep Time: Part 2

Dr. Monte Fleming continues the journey we started in our last episode exploring our rapidly eroding continents. In this episode, we discuss how storms and rivers wear away the continents’ interiors.

Every year an estimated 20 billion tons of sediments are carried from the continents into the oceans via rivers and wind. Given these factors, how long would it take until there were no continents left?

The number is far smaller than the deep-time geologists are comfortable admitting to.

Does the earth really look like it’s billions of years old? Or is it a young world after all?

Dr. Fleming teaches geology at Loma Linda University and has been doing research in applied, sedimentology. He recently built a flume and sediment feed so he and his team can reconstruct different sedimentary structures in a controlled environment.
