Genesis chapter 6 lays out for us the events that led up to the global flood of Noah’s day. And it’s clear that it had gotten pretty bad on Earth.
Genesis 6:11 says that the Earth was corrupt and filled with violence. In fact, verse 5 says that the wickedness of man was great in the Earth and that every intention of the thoughts of man’s heart was only evil continually. Basically, pre-flood man may have done good things here and there, but when he did, he didn’t mean to. It was accidental. That wasn’t his intention.
That’s pretty bad.
So God decided to step in. Genesis 6:6 says,
And the Lord was sorry that he had made man on the earth and he was grieved in his heart.
All right. Now, that leads to our question: is the text saying that God made a mistake when he made man? If he’s omnisient, as the Bible teaches in 1 John 3:20, Psalm 44:21, Ecclesiastes 12:13–14, etc.?
If he knows everything, then why would he seem to be surprised that things went the way that they did?
To answer this, we first need to understand what it means that God was “sorry” or “regretted” making man. What does this word mean?
