“He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion” (Jeremiah 10:12).
Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this? (Job 12:9)
Have you ever gone out on an especially dark night and looked up at the luminous, glittering starry skies? Since a young age the glittering, color-spangled heavens have instilled a sort of awe and admiration in me.
The night skies have always been a source of wonder to humankind and have always drawn us to a deeper question; A question about our existence, of God, and the beginning of all things. Job says, “Is not God in the height of heaven? And behold the height of the stars, how high they are!” (Job 22:12).
David, the poet and harpist of the Old Testament asks the questions in Psalms 8:3–4:
When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
How is it that something like the starry skies can bring out such deep questions?
Maybe it’s the realization that we are just one planet in a galaxy 100,000 light years in diameter and in the company of 300 billion stars.
Or it could be even deeper.
Perhaps the Creator of the stars put something in us that questions our existence when we look at such awe-inspiring beauty. And maybe the stars themselves are showing us the Glory of an infinite, powerful God who cares about the little details in our lives. Psalm 19:1 says,
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth his handiwork.
We know through astronomy much more about the stars and all these findings prove that each star is intricate, unique, and complex. The complexity, yet simple beauty, all point to a Creator of the universe that made the heavens and earth (Genesis 2:1).
All creation points toward the Creator for he formed them. Psalms 148:3 says, “Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light.”
He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names. Psalms 147:4
If the Creator can put such intricate patterns into the stars and can put them into the heavens, count them, and call them by their names wouldn’t He care about you and me the Creation of His hands, formed in His image?
Could the questions that seem to press us as we look at the stars be valid and planted in our hearts for a reason? A greater reason that will fulfill our deepest desires to know our origins, feel loved, and find fulfillment?
As a Christian, I can say that to find the only fulfillment and true understanding of humankind, the origin of everything, and the meaning of life is to seek him who created all things. In Amos 5:8 we read,
Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name:
“Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.
Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the LORD, and my judgment is passed over from my God?
Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.
He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.” (Isaiah 40:26–29)
So next time you are looking up at the starry skies ask the question, “Who hath created these things”? Truly the God of Isaiah 40:28, the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth is maker of all these.
The God of Heaven and Earth and the stars is also God of you and me! God cares for you and counts the very hair of your head (Matthew 10:30). He wants you to feel fulfilled and realize your true destiny! A destiny beyond this world, the stars, everything we see here. A destiny to be with Him where He is one day! Will you accept the call?
Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. (Isaiah 55:1)
