Today, there is a growing trend to elevate nature to the level of the authority of the Holy Bible. Some even reference “The Bible” and “The Book of Nature” as if they were equal.
Galileo speaks poetically of the “book of nature”, and indeed, all of God’s creation is like an open book, full of wonder. It can be studied to reveal amazing things. But the natural around us can quickly become our supreme authority, our god, and I would argue that many scientist have rejected the God of the Bible, placing THEIR INTERPRETATION of the natural world as ultimate truth.
We should beware, as Deuteronomy 4:19 tells us, “Lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them…”
The apostle Paul, speaking to the Romans, tells of those who “served the creature more than the Creator.” Today, we find atheistic scientists using evolutionary theory to advance their godless views. “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.”
Nature cannot stand when compared to the everlasting truth of the Bible:
“The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever.” 1 Pe 1:24-25

As a nature photographer and enthusiast, I deeply love the revelation we receive of God in creation. But it is true, it falls short of the full revelation of God, and nature shouldn’t be elevated to a position of worship. One of my favorite guiding quotes in this arena is from CS Lewis: “If we used the universe He made as our only clue, we would conclude He was a great artist (for our universe is very beautiful), but also that He is quite merciless and no friend of man (for the universe is a very dangerous and terrifying place).” – William
