Physical Laws
When we refer to the physical laws of our universe, we are referring to those principles that, without fail, meet the criteria required under the scientific process (discussed in the next section of this article) to verify a natural physical principle. This is known as a scientific proof and is required before a process observed in nature can be properly called a ‘law’.
As such, basic physical laws are rules that govern our universe which exist without exception. They are, in fact, absolute and unalterable in their basic forms. While many times it may be helpful to test the limits of these laws, to make an arbitrary assumption which clearly violates one or more established physical laws with no existing physical evidence to support that assumption is simply poor science.
Putting it simply – a ‘what if’ supposition is NOT an option when dealing with physical laws.
The Laws of Thermodynamics are Physical Laws based on the properties of processes of materials in the known universe. As such, they MUST be in agreement with all related laws.
In fact, the Laws of Thermodynamics and Newton’s Laws of Motion are inseparably linked by their very nature because they both describe various aspects of the same processes. Below you will find a brief overview of Newton’s Three Laws of Motion:
First Law: This Law is also known as the Law of Inertia and simply states that any object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by an outside force, and that any object in motion will remain in constant motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an outside force.
Second Law: This is also known as the Law of Momentum and states that when a continuous force is applied to an object in a constant direction that object will continue to accelerate in that direction.
Third Law: This is also known as the Law of Action and Reaction and states simply that for every action performed on or by an object there is an equal and opposite reaction.
A brief note on Newton’s Laws of motion is required here. We need to recognize that the ‘object’ mentioned in each of the three laws will always behave according to the applicable law subject to the limitations of the remaining two laws. For example, if we apply a constant force to an airplane to make it accelerate through the atmosphere according to the Second Law of Motion, its maximum velocity will be limited by the friction between the air and the surface of the airplane in agreement with the First Law of Motion, and the faster the plane goes the greater the resistance will be according to the Third Law of Motion.
Furthermore, all of the physical laws in the universe are subject to the restrictions of the Law of Conservation of Matter and Energy. Simply put, this physical law states that all matter in the universe can neither be created nor destroyed; but, may be transformed from one state to another. However, whenever this does take place, there is ALWAYS a loss of order.
Scientific Examination
Any process that can be deemed a scientific or physical truth must, at a minimum, be subject to and pass examination and verification by use of the Scientific Method.
The Scientific Method requires that at the very lease three things be true before a condition or process can even be considered to be a scientific truth. The condition or process must be:
(1) Observable
(2) Predictable
(3) Repeatable
All of these conditions or processes must take place under the same circumstances without any outside intervention once the process has begun.
No natural process has EVER been observed to spontaneously produce a more ordered system or process of its own accord.
The above statement agrees with Newton’s Third Law of Motion, or Law of Inertia. Just as an object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by an outside force; or, just as an object in motion will remain in motion at a constant rate unless acted upon by an outside force, so too will a static process remain static, or a decaying process remain in a continual state of decay unless acted upon by an outside process.
There are those that argue from a misguided perspective that if, by happenstance, some molecular process results in an ‘improvement’ upon the previous – and that then again that process could, by happenstance, reoccur upon the same molecular process billions upon billions of times, we would have the proof we need for abiogenesis (and therefore evolution).
The major flaw in this supposition, however, is glaring even to the most amateur of scientists – we have NEVER OBSERVED such a process in action. Rather, our observations in EVERY instance in the historical geological record have been that people have always been people, cats have always been cats, trees have always been trees, etc.
There is one specific aspect of the ‘outside’ process (or motivator) that is required, but often ignored by evolution proponents. The motivator itself must be ordered and must be of a higher order than the process which it ‘improving’. One cannot simple access raw energy an expect it to bring order to an otherwise unordered or decaying system or process.
Another required aspect of the motivator is that it must continually maintain the ‘improvement’ process of the system or process; otherwise, according to the Second Law of Thermodynamics the system will immediately begin to revert to its original state of decay.
The above requirement agrees with Newton’s Second Law of Motion, or the Law of Momentum. If we wish to accelerate an object (or a process) in a particular direction we MUST apply a continual and directed external force (that is, from ‘outside’ the object or system).
Why God Matters
The very first verse of the Bible tells us, ‘In the beginning God created the heaven (literally the’ heavens’) and the earth’. Without the Creator, who is identified in John 1:1-5 & Colossians 1:16-17 as Christ Jesus none of this would have any meaning, for our universe itself would not even exist!!!
This two-part article has sought to demonstrate that God is sovereign in all things, that His Word is Truth regarding its account of Creation, and that the Bible is the First Authority to be trusted on all matters.
In Romans 1:18-19 we read, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.”
With this judgment pronounced over 2000 years ago on mankind for his willful rejection of God’s simple truth found in His Word, is it any wonder that after having reared several generations to believe that we are nothing more that products of chance chemical reactions that our society is systematically rejecting every decent and moral notion found in the Word of God???
