Mind or Matter? Naturalism or Creationism?

The Need for Faith

Naturalism or creationism; both require faith!

There are those who want to believe that living organisms arose from dead matter. I say, want to believe, because the scientific evidence to support the idea of spontaneous generation does not exist. Evolutionists admit the idea of life evolving from non-life would be virtually a supernatural evolutionary event, but with no evidence they still cling to the possibility. Evolutionist, Harvard biochemist and Nobel Laureate George Wald, writes:

One has only to contemplate the magnitude of this task to concede that the spontaneous generation of a living organism is impossible. Yet here we are—as a result, I believe, of spontaneous generation.¹

There is no evidence that life or the intelligence of humans evolved from rock, dirt, or some other matter. I have coined this unsupported idea as believing ‘from slime to scholar.’ A writer for the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., has admitted that “the emergence of intelligence remains a mystery.” So why do some in the scientific community continue to claim belief in spontaneous generation? It is because they want to believe it.

Scientists are well aware of the scientific standard they hold to in order to claim that something is factual. It is generally known as the scientific method. It requires observation and repetition. The well-known experiment by Dr. Stanley Miller in 1953 was an attempt to produce life from water vapor, hydrogen, ammonia, and methane. It did not work. It produced a poisonous mixture of right– and left-handed amino acids that actually work against the formation of biological proteins needed to produce life.

Reasons Why Evolutionists Cling to the Scientifically Unproven Idea of Life Coming From Nonlife

If there is a supernatural explanation, an intelligent Creator, it could mean that there is actually a foundation for believing in moral standards of absolute right and wrong. This would mean that there is a God who has rules by which we should live and act.

For example, there are the biblical Ten Commandments, which tell us how to get along with God and how to get along with people. But for the one who has decided not to believe in God, there is a resistance when being told how to live. After all, some would say, “I want to live life my way without any outside interference.”

Another reason some avoid believing in a Creator of life is that it is related to biblical creationism, and this is considered an embarrassing simplistic alternative to the supposedly intellectual theory of evolution. This is why even some Christians make the attempt to reconcile Genesis and evolution because they don’t want to be considered ignorant. They tend to side with what is termed theistic evolution—the idea that God guided evolution as his means of creating over supposedly millions of years.

But this creates theological problems because the Bible asserts there was no physical death before Adam and Eve’s sin. The Apostle Paul writes:

Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned (Romans 5:12).

Did All Humans and Biological Life Evolve From Stardust and the Remnants of the Big Bang?

Materialists and those who believe in unaided naturalism for the evolvement of life would have to agree with this. But where is the evidence? Even if the Big Bang were true (and there are serious difficulties) there is a huge unresolved problem for evolutionists, which has to do with a biological marvel—DNA.

Evolutionists suggest the idea that a lot of little changes in DNA (microevolution) lead to bigger changes over time (macroevolution). This, they suggest, makes it possible for one living creature or organism to evolve into a completely new and different one. However, the trick which they have not been able to explain is where did all the incredibly complex information come from to get things started in the first place?

The actual biological evidence tells us that each living organism or creature, including humans, had to have all the necessary information programmed into the DNA and be ready to activate all at the same time. In other words, DNA had to be complete with nothing missing in order to be effective in producing variation in the different kinds of life.

Biochemist Michael Behe in his book Darwin’s Black Box uses a simple mousetrap as an illustration. There are usually about nine separate parts needed to make the mousetrap effective. If one part is removed, no matter which one, it cannot do its job properly. Behe termed this mechanical system for catching mice as having irreducible complexity. In other words, every part has a vital function needed by the whole, and if one is missing things just don’t work.

It is an extraordinary deception to believe that life came from stardust when the biological evidence is clearly unsupportive of such an idea. DNA is information that is programmed into the trillions of cells in the bodies of all living organisms. There are nano-sized machines operating in the cells with instructions as to what to do, when to do it, and how to do it.

Information is nonphysical; it does not arise magically out of matter. We are still learning about the absolutely incredible information contained in DNA that is the physical foundation of all life. We also see before our very eyes that the Creator of DNA likes variety in his creation. But he made limits and boundaries for variation which is evident by using the scientific method of observation and repetition. In other words, dogs are dogs, big ones and small ones, and will never be anything other than dogs. Darwin’s finches have always been finches, and will never be anything other than finches.

Yes, Charles Darwin who wrote On the Origin of Species to support the idea of evolution in 1859, would today surely have to confess what he actually suspected, that time might prove his theory wrong. If only he had been able to use the electron microscope perhaps he would have written a different book.

By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth…Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast. (Psalm 33:6,8,9).
