The Heart, Math, and Science – Katherine Loop

heart

An adult’s heart beats an average of 60 to 100 times per minute when at rest [National Institute of Health, quoted by the American Heart Association]. Let’s take the low end of that and use 60 beats per minute. That would mean that in the course of an hour, if all someone did was rest, the heart would beat 60 x 60, or 3,600 times. Over a day, it would beat 24 x 3,600, or 86,400 times. Over a year, it would beat 31,104,000 times. Of course, we’re not always at rest, so our heart rate is often more than it is when at rest, meaning our heart actually beats many more times than that.

The number of times our heart beats is truly mind-boggling. Now consider: we don’t have to tell our heart to beat—it just does it, day in and day out, without a break. And this incredible machine is small enough to fit perfectly inside our bodies. Truly we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14)!

Looking at our heartbeat is a simple example of using math to explore God’s creation. First, someone had to count heartbeats and find an average. Then we had to multiply to find the number of beats per year.

Math and science go hand-in-hand. While you’ll often hear facts quoted in science books, know that it’s math that helps us figure out those facts. Math is not an isolated, meaningless subject. It’s a way of describing and exploring God’s creation! And as we use it that way, we find ourselves awed again and again at the Creator’s handiwork.

Learn math that makes sense with the Principles of Mathematics Book 1 Set!

Math is a real-life tool that points us to God and helps us explore His creation, yet it often comes across as dry facts and meaningless rules. Here at last is a curriculum that has a biblical worldview integrated throughout the text and problems, not just added as an afterthought!
