There is a constant war going on between creationists and evolutionists today. Many Christians think that if we could just give the atheists proof of God’s existence they would see the truth and believe. When I was younger I also though that this creation vs. evolution battle could be won with more proofs, more evidence, and more debates. But there was one thing that I didn’t understand until here recently. Why didn’t the atheists see all the evidence for the creation account?
The evidence of God’s handiwork is manifested in the world all around us. So why don’t atheists see the world the way we do? When we look at everything from the unimaginable size of the universe, the complexity of life, and even the very existence of matter itself shows that the secular scientists are indeed without excuse. And yet all the evidence that we give them for a designer, a young universe, or anything else related to creation falls off like water on a duck’s back., They say things like: “It only looks like it’s designed—it’s really not!”, “Maybe the rock layers just slid on top like that!”, “survival of the fittest killed off the life that wasn’t fit to survive!”, and on it goes.
Atheists often accuse creationists of being anti-science because of their firm stance on the word of God. Their arguments seem to make sense. After all, creationists will not change their beliefs when it comes to their beliefs in God and the creation account as seen in Genesis even when the evidence may seem to be against it. Therefore they are incapable of properly evaluating evidence. But atheists are equally guilty of the exact same thing. Even if you could prove to them that God existed, most would still not believe in him.
It’s very likely that there will be people reading this that will not see any logical arguments whatsoever. Then there will be some that understand it perfectly. How can there be such a large shift in reasoning? It all comes back to starting points. Two people can see an animal from a distance and have two different opinions on what it is. One can say it’s a horse, one can say it’s a cow, but it’s not until they can get up close to it that they see that it’s just a fallen tree.
That’s the way it is for the beginning of the world. Nobody can get up close to the beginning and observe it. So we have to look from our perspectives at the evidence around us. Creationists start with the belief in a knowable God who told us about the creation in detail in his word. Atheists on the other hand start with the belief that nature is all there is and that everything had to create itself. While reality is absolute, people range from all kinds of positions where they see it. That’s why it’s good to know that we have a God who knows everything—we can believe what he tells us even when the world around us seems to contradict it because the evidence can be misleading, but God never is.
