Light makes life possible:
In him was life, and the life was the light of men, John 1:4
From NASA: “The Sun is the brightest and most familiar object in the sky. Life on Earth would not be possible without it: The food we eat exists because of sunlight falling on green plants, …Life as we know it needs liquid water, and Earth is the only planet to have it: without the Sun, Earth would be an icy rock in space.
Sunlight carries energy, which warms up the Earth and is the driving force behind all our weather and climate. Sunlight also evaporates water–from the oceans, from lakes and rivers and from green plants….turning liquid water into vapor…[eventually cooling into] the tiny droplets of clouds, then if the cooling is more drastic, into raindrops. …That is how water, clouds and rain play a major role in the transport of solar heat from the ground back to space and help create the complex patterns of weather and climate.”
Light exists in two different (and hard to understand) forms:
Jesus answered, “The fact is, before Abraham was born, I Am [Yahweh].” John 8:58
From The Science of Light: Light acts like particles —little light bullets— that stream from the source. This explains how shadows work.
Light also acts like waves—ripples in space—instead of bullets. This explains how rainbows work. In fact, light is both. This “wave-particle duality” is one of the most confusing—and wonderful—principles of physics.
Light bends when it shines through a refracting substance:
With the pure you will show yourself as pure; and with the crooked you will show yourself as twisted. Psalm 18:26
From the University of British Columbia: When light passes from one substance to another, it changes direction. This effect is familiar to all of us from observations in bath tubs and swimming pools, and it is called refraction. The effect is usually dealt with as if light were rays that literally bend in direction as they pass through the boundary, but in fact the elegant explanation of what happens relies on the wave theory of light.
Don’t forget to do your experiments: grow a plant, sit in a sunbeam, go swimming/fishing, use a straw to drink your water, put on a shadow puppet show! Life is a big science experiment when you’re paying attention!
Then God said, “Let there be light!” And light began to shine. He saw the light, and he knew that it was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. God named the light “day,” and he named the darkness “night.”
