Hummingbird Nests

Hummingbirds build nests from soft materials; such as hair, moss, cotton, etc. They often use spider webs to help hold things together. The above nest was discovered in a beech tree on our farm. And you can see that all of the materials came from that tree.

It was amazing to find a hummingbird nest so near the ground, but was easy to overlook, being very small and colored like the tree branch. Their nests are usually high up in the trees where we live, but this one was just above our heads. Hummingbirds lay 2-3 small eggs, which resemble Tic Tac mints.

The below video is of a hummingbird gathering “nest materials” (filmed at 480 frames per second). And in this case, the landowner has put out a basket of fuzz for the hummingbirds to use.

The design aspects are remarkable. Yes, hummingbird nests reflect God’s wisdom in creation, just as the hummingbirds do. They’re really good at building nests which are unique from other bird nests. Hummingbirds are marvels in every way — and in every way they point to our Creator.
