Our Amazing Moon: Its Purpose

By David Rives

God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

In the book of Genesis, we’re told that God created the moon on the fourth day to be for a light in the firmament of the heaven. It was also to be for signs, seasons, days, and years.

During the last days, we are told that there will be lunar signs that point to our Savior’s return.

The phases of the moon can be used to determine months, and many of the feasts of the Lord were based on the biblical lunar calendar.

The sun and moon give us our day—a cycle of light and darkness that was instituted in the beginning.

Also, by using the sun and moon we can multiply the cycles of the months and calculate years.

Our moon is the most visually stunning celestial object in the night because it is so easy to see even without the use of a telescope or binoculars. While we can study the smaller characteristics of the moon with high-powered optics, you don’t need a telescope to marvel at that amazing nightlight we call the moon.

A unique object designed by our Creator with its own special purpose.
